Hello family and friends! It is estimated that up to 25 million children are now participating in competitive sports. While this number continues to grow, so do the number of sports-related injuries, with 20% of these injuries occurring to the jaw, teeth, or face. More than 5 million teeth are avulsed every year due to sports, and many of these cases could have been avoided by using a mouthguard. The National Youth Sports Foundation for Safety states that an athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain damage to their teeth when they aren't wearing a properly fitted mouthguard.

Simply having a mouthguard, however, is not enough. Don't use a store-bought mouthgard, you should have one custom made by your dentist that fits comfortably and is resilient. Mouthguards are most often used in contact sports such as football and rugby, but experts also recommend using them in less-violent sports such as basketball, soccer, and even volleyball.
